Strategic Trade Controls are domestic mechanisms through which a country controls the movement of strategic goods and technologies it considers sufficiently important to be of national security concern, implementing unilateral controls as well as commitments made in bilateral and multilateral agreements. The Export and Import Permits Act administered by Global Affairs Canada and the Defence Production Act administered by Public Services and Procurement Canada are examples of such mechanisms.

Export Insights Inc. focusses on defence, aerospace, space, nuclear, chemical, biological, and dual-use goods and technologies. Within Canada, these strategic goods and technologies are listed in the Export Control List, Import Control List, and Brokering Control List administered by Global Affairs Canada, and the Controlled Goods List administered by Public Services and Procurement Canada.
